What a Mess

I just need to vent for a minute...

You won't believe what a previous owner of our house did to this guest bedroom.  What was supposed to be an easy wallpaper removal Sunday turned out to be a 5 hour process that has given me sore hands today.

First, the chair railing came down, which, by the way, was about 5 inches too tall.  Then, we removed the lighthouse border.  Next, we noticed a little bit of wallpaper where the chair railing used to be.  After starting to remove that we notice that something was horribly wrong.  There was remnants of wallpaper on the entire bottom half of the wall... and it had been painted over instead of removed.  Nightmare begins...

Here is what we assume they did.  They move in, did not like the wallpaper border that covered the entire bottom portion of the wall under the chair railing, decided instead of properly removing the wallpaper they would just rip it down.  If anyone has removed wallpaper before, you know that you can rip off some of the paper, but that means two things happen.  One, left on the wall is a thin layer of wallpaper still stuck to the wall, and two, you successfully remove the wallpaper, along with the second thin layer, but in the process you hit dry wall, and the tearing you've done caused dry wall to rip as well.  Both things happened, and instead of completely removing the wallpaper, they puttied the holes and painted over the wallpaper.  Thus, we now have a disaster.

After tetiously pealing painted wallpaper for a couple hours we took a second trip to Lowe's Hardware for more wallpaper remover, and were able to remove the remaining wallpaper.  Tonight we will be puttying the holes and crossing our fingers the walls are not a total loss.

On a better note...

My uncle is a wise and great landscaper for CCNC and graciously gave me about 30 tulip and daffodil bulbs last night, along with some good fertilizer.  I can't wait to plant them, and am SO excited that I'll be able to get more plants from him now that I have a house and a yard!

  1. Ugh! Even without complications, removing wallpaper can drive a person to madness. I'm sorry.
